A Sign of Hope: Compassionate Care in a Level 1 Trauma Center

On February 26, 2026, 15-year-old Jailyn Melendez was critically injured in an ATV accident and airlifted to the Level 1 Trauma Center at Valleywise Health Medical Center.

Jailyn had suffered a severe traumatic brain injury and was experiencing seizures. The Valleywise Health trauma and neurocritical care teams immediately went to work, carefully managing her treatment to protect her brain and give her the best chance at recovery.

“As soon as Jailyn came through the emergency room doors, we knew we had to act quickly,” said Dr. Alexandra Hollingworth, Valleywise Health trauma surgeon. “Every detail matters when treating a traumatic brain injury, and our entire team was focused on giving her the best possible outcome.”

For days, Jailyn remained in a coma while physicians, nurses and specialists monitored her closely. Then came a breakthrough.

During an assessment, Dr. Hollingworth asked Jailyn to open her eyes and move her hand. Finally, she gave her one more request: “If you can give me a peace sign, I’ll leave you alone for the rest of the day.”

Jailyn slowly raised her hand and extended two fingers.

“Watching Jailyn follow commands and show me a peace sign was exactly the sign we needed,” said Dr. Hollingworth.

“We were all screaming and crying and hugging. People think that doctors shouldn’t have any emotion, but we do, and we celebrate with families. It’s not guaranteed that a patient will come out of a deep coma like this, so when it happens, it is worth celebrating.”

For Jailyn’s family, exceptional medical care was matched by compassion during one of the most difficult chapters of their lives.

“The doctors and nurses at Valleywise treated Jailyn like she was their own daughter,” said her mother, Patricia.

“Every single nurse went above and beyond to make sure she was comfortable. We know that God had a purpose for bringing Jailyn to Valleywise and we are very grateful for everything they did for our whole family.”
